For newcomers: Cross-country skiing (XC skiing) involves traversing snow-covered terrain, usually without the use of ski lifts or external assistance. Skiers move forward by either stride (classic style) or skate (skating style), using ski poles for propulsion.
Different variations of the sport are suited to various terrains, ranging from rugged natural landscapes to groomed tracks designed specifically for skiing. This modern sport closely resembles the original form of skiing, from which disciplines like alpine skiing, ski jumping, and Telemark skiing have evolved.
Davos Klosters is particularly renowned for cross-country skiing, offering excellent training facilities for athletes and hosting numerous events for fans of this Nordic sport. One of the most prestigious is the FIS Cross Country World Cup – Davos Nordic, held annually in December, alongside several popular public fun races.
Get the chance to follow the tracks of one of the world’s top cross-country skiers, Dario Cologna, by climbing the steep “Cologna-Stutz” named after him. Cologna became the first Swiss athlete to win the Overall World Cup ranking at just 23 years old and claiming Olympic gold in the Men’s 15 km Free in 2010.
To offer you the full Nordic experience, starting in November, you can book cross-country skiing lessons at night with us at Ride and Smile. Get the thrill of tackling more challenging tracks under the stars or the full moon, while enjoying the stunning nighttime views of Davos.
This unforgettable adventure will allow you to connect with nature in a unique way that few others can, making it the perfect choice for both seasoned skiers and those looking for a truly special experience.
For day tours, we offer two different options, each with its own unique charm. You can choose between the stunning mountain valleys of Dischma or Sertig in Davos, home to some of the most beautiful cross-country tracks in Switzerland, accessible only via classic XC skiing. The trails climb about 300 meters and require a good physical fitness, with a total distance of 6 kilometers in Dischma or 10 kilometers in Sertig.
For this reason, the day tours are best suited for intermediate or advanced XC skiers, as it’s important to be able to brake safely and feel confident on downhill sections. However, beginners are also welcome to book this tour, as we tailor it individually and offer the possibility to take the bus back instead of skiing down. Additionally, there’s the option to enjoy a delicious fondue or special lunch in the most traditional restaurant in the valley. Let us know to make the reservation for you.
